We now know DNA studies match kin who lived in Northern England who went by the name Chomley, Cholmley, or Chamley. Our kin might have lived in Ireland or Scotland before England but no DNA matches in those areas yet. Whatever the cultural or historical issues of the day, our ancestors definitely wanted to leave the British Isles and go to America.
Given a timeline of records PERHAPS our ancestors left because of cultural events leading up to the Battle of Culloden. The first verified record is in Bertie County is 1744, then 1757 on a tax list. First of the DNA 1st cousins or brothers was Isaac Chamblee, Hertford Co NC on a tax list in 1779, obviously of legal age. The oral history that 6 came from Ireland or Scotland (or England) would then fit the years surrounding the Battle of Culloden. One can wonder.

Scottish Immigration to America increased as Scots gained access to America as Indentured Servants Scottish Immigration to America in the 1700's was undertaken by angry Scots following defeat at the hands of the English at the 1746 Battle of Culloden... In 1745 Bonnie Prince Charlie, the the Stuart heir, attempted to claim the British throne but was defeated in 1746 at the Battle of Culloden. The defeat at the Battle of Culloden prompted large scale emigration from Scotland to America and the history of Scottish Immigration to America began in earnest, although Scots had first emigrated during the Colonial era of American history. More on this at Scottish Immigration to America.

Boat and immigration lists and other early American records including indentured servants have not yielded results. We have have done a surname survey of these immigration records, but there is no pattern or conclusion. We looked at the Chambliss, Chumbly, etc. lines for a few years but after DNA studies we now rule that out. No paper trail from Chambless/Chambliss/Cumbly substantiates anything in our ancestry anyway.

Where did we first find them on record in America? Bertie County, North Carolina--which was later split into Hertford County in December 1759. We think some of the early records ended up in Hertford County, which unfortunately suffered two fires and most early holdings were lost.

What is more important is where our ancestors migrated in America. Our ancestors needed and desired many acres of land to support their families. As land was advertised or given as military warrants, our ancestors began to migrate.

Thanks to Melissa Hinton and all ancestors and descendants of Rachel who was enslaved. If it wasn't for DNA results from Melissa's family we could not have found Jesse Hinton, husband of Sarah Chamblee. Going through old paperwork, there were records linking Jesse Hinton and Robert Chamblee, et al, but nothing substantive enough to definitively claim Jesse is Sarah's husband.

The Nancy Pippin Problem
Nancy Pippin was supposedly the daughter of Richard Pippin of Franklin Co NC, although I have not yet found proof of Richard Pippin's children in any records. Please contact me with substantive documentation from a county or state repository--chamblee.genealogy@gmail.com--if you have proof.
In the late 1880's, Rotcher P. Chamblee traveled the nearby counties, talked to people and probably looked at the records they had. His book is surprisingly accurate, with just a few errors and misunderstandings. The book is now is in the hands of descendants of John Sigma Chamblee, M.D. but I made a careful copy.

Rotcher P. Chamblee's book states that "Nancy Pippin was from Franklin County." It makes perfect sense that Richard Pippin living in Franklin County per enumerations, could have a daughter Nancy who married James B. Chamblee (again, I've found no proof yet). Richard Pippin lived in Franklin Co until 1830. By the 1840 enumeration Richard Pippin is enumerated with younger son of James B Chamblee, Willie/Wiley Chamblee. This slender thread of logic is holding the "Richard Pippin daughter theory" together for now because why would Richard Pippin, listed as a Rev War pensioner in 1840, be with a James Chamblee child unless there was a strong relationship to the family?

In order for James B. and Nancy to have their "liaisons" before they married (see below), they had to be geographically desirable, which means both being in Wake County.

The bastardy court case was in Wake County and there was a Nancy Pippin on many tax lists in Little River District, Wake County, not far from James B. Chamblee. Also listed many times in Little River were Isaac Pippin, Sr. ,and Isaac Pippin, Jr. As soon as James B. Chamblee marries "Nancy Pippin" she drops off the tax lists.

It sounds like the person on the tax lists probably is the same Nancy who married James B. Chamblee because she's in quite close in his neighborhood. It's unusual that the Nancy on the tax list is supposedly a single person with property (if she is Richard Pippin's daughter), while her alleged father resides in home territory in Franklin Co NC until he moved to Wake by the1840 census. Why is she living in far off Wake County alone and apparently single if she is Richard Pippin's daughter? How could a single woman own property in the early 1800's? She consistently declared 100 acres on the Wake Co tax lists.

Is the "Nancy Pippin" on the tax lists the daughter of Richard Pippin or is she someone else entirely? Richard Pippin could simply be a relative of Nancy and not her father which would account for Willie Chamblee taking him in. Maybe this "tax list Nancy Pippin" was married previously and why she reported 100 acres?

Children in order of Isaac Chamblee's land division:

1. Sarah Elizabeth Chamblee, b. Jan 1, 1777, Wake Co NC, d. Mar 17, 1862, Pleasant Ridge, Greene Co AL, m. Jesse Hinton on March 15, 1799, Wake Co NC; Jesse b. 7 Jan 1773, d. 2 Aug 1850, Greene Co AL.

2. Nancy Chamblee, b. ca 1785, d. after 1820; she could have been born in Johnston or Wake Co NC, in ca 1783 he was on Wake Co tax list, in 1784 Isaac Chamblee listed on the Johnston Co tax list. Probably had land both counties, Robert Chamblee had land near county boundary, Jared Chamblee had land both sides. In 1788 Isaac purchased 300 acres for 200 pds from Lodwick Alford on Poley and Cedar Rock Branches, Wake Co, witnesses were Robert Chamblee, George Chamblee (ref: Wake Co NC Book H p496). This is the land described in the land division. Nancy m. Miles Witherington, he was unheard of after 1810, probably died.

3. Elisha Chamblee, b. ca 1779
Note: There were two Elisha Chamblees living at the same time and both living in Hertford Co NC. One was the son of a John Chamblee who d. 1806, who in his will named his son Elisha Chamblee, and the other was the son of Isaac Chamblee of Wake Co NC, and he is listed on Isaac's land division and subsequent records.

We know that Elisha A. Chamblee of Hertford Co is this John's son, not Isaac's son, due to a death notice in the newspapers concerning his mother.

DIED "In the midst of life we are in death" . Died at the residence of Elisha Chamblee, Esq. in Hertford County the 21st of June, Mrs. Elizabeth Chamblee, in the 65th year of her age. Mrs. Chamblee had not connected herself with any church, yet we believe that she entertained a hope that reached beyond the grave: hence, we believe that she has gone to reap that reward that remains for those that die in the faith.

The Elisha A. Chamblee in Hertford had the "Esq." title because of his involvement with the court and politics.

The Elisha [A.] Chamblee, son of John Chamblee, was mentioned in John's will as being "not yet of age" [legal age 21] in 1806 when John's will was written; therefore anything at that year and before that year would probably be attributed to Elisha, the son of Isaac Chamblee.

In March 29, 1806, Elisha Chamblee of Hertford Co sold to John Chamblee of Wake 50L... 38 acres of his part of widow's dowry of Treacy Chamblee..." being all the land that Elisha Chamblee lays any claim to by the death of my father Isaac Chamblee." Wit: Wm. Marriott.

APRIL 30, 1806, Elisha Chamblee [son of Isaac] of Herford Co and John Chamblee [there are a few John Chamblee/Chamlees living at the same time, caveat emptor] of Wake Co. sells for 50 pds land in Wake Co, 38 Acres, it being part of the widows dowry of Trese Chamblee.
Wit: Wm. Marriott, Benjamin Marriott. (FNC W1c #4971 Pt 3, Bk T 1806-1807)

Isaac and Robert Chamblee were brothers via DNA, there is one document linking George, Robert and Isaac. Separating the "John Chamblees" in Wake and Hertford Co NC records make it confusing.
People named John:
(1) John Chamblee ["Shamblee" as written in will] who left will 1806 in Wake Co naming son Elisha Shamblee, referred to his wife's [Elizabeth Askew] relatives in Hertford Co, who has been determined to be Isaac's son, as mentioned in Isaac's land division with approximate birth date of 1770--all living at the same time.
(2) John Chamblee b. ca 1772, son of Robert Chamblee

The John who left a will 1806 appears to be the son of Isaac.

A. Feb 26, 1835 Wake Co NC, Elisha A. Chamblee [son of John who d. 1806 and left a will in Wake Co] of Hertford Co sells to Newton Wood of Wake County land adjoining James [B] Chamblee [son of Robert b. ca 1738] and others, 100 A. that his father willed to him on the north side of Cedar Rock Branch. Wit: Abraham Jones. (Wake Co Book 11, 1832-1835 p. 438)

Cedar Rock Branch area is where Isaac Chamblee lived. On March 15, 1788 Isaac Chamblee purchased 300 acres for 200 pds from Lodwick Alford on Poley and Cedar Rock Branches. Isaac was consistent reporting 300 acres on Wake Co tax list until 1799, a year before he died when he reported only 100 acres. The land division totals 311 acres.

Nov 1803: Land of "Isaac Chamble" on the waters of Little River divided pursuant to court order:
[plat map indicates land is where Cedar Rock Branch and Poly Branch
meet on Little River, bounded by the Austin line on the west and the
Hinton line on the south]
Tract A: Lucretia Chamble, relict: 103 acres and house
No. 1: Jesse Horton in right of his wife [Sally]: 26 acres
No. 2: Nancy Chamble: 26 acres
No. 3: Elisha Chamble: 26 acres
No. 4: Zadock Chamble: 26 acres
No. 5: Hardy Chamble: 26 acres
No. 6: Lewis Chamble: 26 acres
No. 7: John Chamble: 26 acres
No. 8: James Reynolds in right of his wife [Rachell]: 26 acres

In DEC 20, 1787, Robert Chamblee was witness on a deed from Lodwick Alford to John Merritt on Cedar Rock Branch. This area is near the Old Tarboro Road and the Little River junction, Cedar Rock is a tributary of Little River.

B. I give unto my loving wife Elizabeth Shamblee all my land during the term and time of my son Elisha Shamblee being of age and in care that my wife should live till my son come of age [Elisha being about 12 when the will was written?], then my will is that all my land should be equally divided between them.
This record of division between Elisha A and his mother, Elizabeth Askew (Chamblee) has not been found; the division most likely took place in Hertford Co where Elizabeth and her son Elisha A. Chamlee/Chamblee lived. Hertford Co burned twice so there are few records. Robert Chamblee signed a petition to divided Bertie into Hertford and he ended up on the Hertford side--much genealogy burned.

The land in B must have been inherited by John "Shamblee" from Isaac Chamblee's estate in order for Elisha A. Chamblee to sell the Cedar Rock Branch land as "his father willed to him." Note that the deed said "Elisha A. Chamblee" not just "Elisha Chamblee." Remember, there are two people named Elisha. It would be normal for John who left a will 1806 to name his son after his brother.

Concerning John Shamblee who left a will 1806--hard to track him down in records and to separate the John Chamblees. Since John's (who left a will) brother, Elisha, lived in Hertford County, perhaps John and his wife Elizabeth and his son Elisha A. Chamblee also lived there for a time and their records burned, too.
Why did some family members live so far away? Isaac Chamblee was on a tax list in Hertford but he ended up in Wake County records where his home was.

APRIL 30, 1806 - Wake Co NC
Elisha Chamblee [has to be son of Isaac because Elisha A Chamblee was too young per the will] OF HERTFORD Co and John Chamblee [has to be son of Isaac, and if this is the one who left a will 1806 he died shortly thereafter] of Wake Co. sells for 50 pds land in Wake Co, 38 Acres, it being part of the widows dowry of Trese Chamblee [their mother who didn't died until 1813-181].

George W. married quite a few times and so far all the wives are not proven:

(1) _____Timms, this assertion by researchers in 70's and 80's, undocumented. No known children.
(2) Rebecca Morgan prob. born Pendleton District, SC, prob. marr ca 1807, Anderson Co (created in 1826 from Pendleton & others); many trees have her death date date as 1838 in Polk Co GA. Polk Co GA was not created until 1851. Notice the date mashup with Tanner. Tanner's first child b. about 1806 and last child after 1819 and Morgan's child, Nancy Chamblee b. 1809. Thus, this Rebecca Morgan as wife scenario, if true, could be a "paternal event" situation.

(3) Christiana Adeline Tanner b. ca 1785, d. bef 1825, Hall Co GA

(4) Nancy Kimbro b. ca 1805 SC, d. 1870-1880 Jackson Co GA; she is enumerated with G. W. in 1850 & 1860.

There is also a marriage record for Washington Chamblee & Rebecca D. Martin, Dec. 21, 1837, Forsyth Co GA. George Washington Chamblee/Chamlee was referred to as Washington or "Wash" in most county records. There are nine people named George Washington Chamblee and Chamlee in the U.S. but all born after this George W. and not near this area of Georgia.
